Aluminum Cans May Soon Replace Plastic Bottles

David D'Addario is a 30-year veteran of the metals industry, and has spent a large part of that time leading one of the world’s largest suppliers of aluminum can stock, Wise Metals Group. Now chairman and CEO of New Day Aluminum, David D'addario continues to work in a field that is growing rapidly, particularly as aluminum starts to become favored over plastic containers.

Public concern over plastic contamination is reaching new heights, and plastic bottle manufacturers are taking note. In response, the bottled water industry is starting to explore alternatives, with aluminum cans being one of the main contenders.

This places aluminum manufacturers in a strong position, but the future may not be so clear cut. While aluminum is much easier to recycle and is likely to produce less waste than plastic, producing aluminum cans releases much more carbon dioxide than plastic bottles. It’s somewhat of a double-edged sword, but with evolving extraction and recycling technologies, it’s believed by many in the industry that aluminum cans could soon replace plastic bottles almost entirely.
